The little girl sat on a bench in the entrance hall of the orphanage she lived in. The old man had told her to stay there as he went with the head nurse to her office. The door right opposite of where she sat wasn't fully closed and she could hear them talking, but they were too far away to understand anything. She also heard whispering voices on the landing above and she saw faces disappearing when she looked up. "No wonder they're whispering...an old man coming in with me and asking for the head nurse...they probably think I stole something" she thought to herself. She tried to get her mind off the egg that had wriggled right in front of her, but she could stop thinking about it. She still wasn't entirely sure that the man actually told the truth when he said that it was a dragon's egg. It definitely was an egg, it had been way to warm to be a stone...but the egg of a dragon?

A little girl sat on the roof. She sat there and nobody saw her, nobody was even noticing her. Everyone was looking at the same thing as she was: a rough but sturdy wooden stage in the middle of the marketplace with five wooden pedestals on it, each pedestal topped with a scarlet velvet cushion. The pedestals were wooden too, but unlike the stage they were of a much darker wood, polished to a shine and delicately carved.
The little girl on the roof watched the wholes scene with an interest that was hard to restrain. She wanted to jump down on the street and run up on that stage. But even if she was just nine years old, she knew that a drop from the roof of a two-story house would be far too dangerous. And she knew that the guards at the stairs on both sides of the stage would stop her if she would get that far. Or the guards in front of the stage. Or the old man on the stage, the one standing behind the pedestals. The man that was keenly watching the children that
